Colossians chapter two

So, the question is, does Colossians 2:16 indicate that we no longer need to keep the dietary laws of the Bible, nor keep the Sabbath or the celebrations of Leviticus 23?

Colossians 2:16 Let no one therefore judge you in eating or in drinking, or in respect of a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths –

Many see this as an obstacle that is so serious that many people will not keep the Law of Yahweh because of it. They read it and superficially see it or understand it out of context; consequently they assume that the passage negates the Law of Yahweh to have been annulled when the Messiah died. This is simply not true!

By going back to the beginning of the chapter, Sha’ul is expressing concerns for the Colossians and those who are living in Laodicea. Be warned, we are living in the age of Laodicea today, and this chapter is being addressed to us today!

Revelation 3:14-22 “And to the messenger of the assembly in Laodikeia write, ‘The Amen, the Trustworthy and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of Elohim, says this:  (15) “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I would that you were cold or hot.  (16)  “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am going to vomit you out of My mouth.  (17)  “Because you say, ‘Rich I am, and I am made rich, and need none at all,’ and do not know that you are wretched, and pitiable, and poor, and blind, and naked.  (18)  “I advise you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, so that you become rich; and white garments, so that you become dressed, so that the shame of your nakedness might not be shown; and anoint your eyes with ointment, so that you see. Footnote (19) “As many as I love, I reprove and discipline. So be ardent and repent.  (20)  “See, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I shall come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.  (21)  “To him who overcomes I shall give to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.  (22)  “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.” ’ ”

Footnote: 1Col. 1:15, Heb. 1:6. - : 1Ps. 19:10, Ps. 119:72 & 127, Prov. 30:5.

The laodicean’s were lukewarm and not zealous for Bible Truth. We may observe this in people today as they drift into religious organizations with ambiguous doctrines and a lukewarm spirit. Sha’ul declared that he was teaching the truth of Yahweh, in whom is hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Sha’ul warned the people of Colossae to beware of anyone deceiving them with   enticing words. Is this the manner in which we should be reading the Bible today? READ IT FOR YOURSELVES and take a literal interpretation from it whenever possible. We must believe that the authors of the Bible were not seeking to confuse the people as they delivered the Words of Yahweh. How many of you actually read the Bible? The warning’s of Sha’ul still stands today as when he wrote it.

Colossians 2:6-7  Therefore, as you accepted Messiah Yahshua the Master, walk in Him,  (7)  having been rooted and built up in Him, and established in the belief, as you were taught, overflowing in it with thanksgiving.

Sha’ul is urging the Colossians to remain steadfast in Yahshua Messiah just as they have received Him. He is telling them to stay rooted and be built up in Yahshua as they have been taught. We must not neglect to recall that Yahshua taught His people to obey the Law of Yahweh, Matthew 5:17-20 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets.1 I did not come to destroy but to complete. Footnote: 1The Law and the Prophets is a term used for the pre-Messianic Scriptures.  (18)  “For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done.  (19)  “Whoever, then, breaks one of the least of these commands, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.  (20)  “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall by no means enter into the reign of the heavens. Footnote: 1Lk. 16:17. Footnote: 1Mt. 15:3-9, Mk. 7:7-13, John 7:19, Acts 7:53, Rom. 2:23-27, Gal. 6:13.

Yahshua was the sacrifice for sin, which is defined in the Bible as the transgression of the Law; 1 John 3:4 Everyone doing sin also does lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.

Yahshua was not sent to do away with the Law or Torah of Yahweh, but to offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice so that we would not need to die for any transgression we have committed in our past before taking Yahshua as our Savior. Think about that and meditate for a moment, because I can tell you that it will be a turning point in your life if you can grasp this momentous TRUTH. Yahshua the Mashiach came to condemn sin in the flesh, again remember that sin is the transgression of Yahweh’s Torah or Law;

Romans 8:3-4 For the Torah being powerless, in that it was weak through the flesh, Yahweh, having His own Son in the likeness of flesh of sin, and concerning sin, condemned sin in the flesh, (4)  so that the righteousness of the Torah should be completed in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Therefore, the message of Yahshua the Mashiach is to obey Yahweh and keep His commandments, while offering Himself as a sacrifice for the sins of those who seek to live for the Heavenly Father.

Yahweh has sent His Ruach HaKodesh in the NAME of Yahshua to raise the TRUE worshiper’s to a higher plane of Spirituality and life to give them the mind of our Elohim. This was the teaching of Sha’ul, so the Law of Yahweh was not done away with when the Mashiach died.

Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one makes a prey of you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary matters of the world and not according to Messiah. Footnote: 1See v. 20, and Gal. 4:3 & 9.

It should be that when we read this verse that it is speaking about WORLDLYNESS, doing that which is motivated by the spirit of the world, or the spirit of the prince of the air, as opposed to the way of Yahweh that is the keeping of His Law. Philosophy is defined as; “a study of the process governing thought and conduct; investigation of the principles that regulate the universe and underlie all reality.”

Empty deceit is defined as; “the action or practice of deceiving someone by concealing or misrepresenting the truth.”

Therefore, what Sha’ul meant was empty LIES or using shrewd tactics to deceive the people of Yahweh, this by the spirit of the world. The final point Sha’ul was mentioning in this verse is, “Traditions of men,” can be defined as, “the handing down of customs or beliefs from generation to generation over a long period of time.” They are the customs of MEN that have NO foundation in the Bible, which is the WORD OF YAHWEH!

Sha’ul urges the Colossians and US, the called of Yahweh, to avoid being influenced by the spirit of the world after they have been immersed in the Name of Yahshua HaMashiach and received the Ruach HaKodesh….according to the Messiah.

The truth is that the spirit of the world is opposed to the Messiah and His Doctrine, which is; “Colossians 2:9 Because in Him dwells all the completeness of the Mightiness bodily,”

What was the Messiah’s teaching and what did He stand for in His ministry?

1 Kepha 2:21-24  For to this you were called, because Messiah also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps,  (22) “who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth,” (23) who, being reviled, did not revile in return; suffering, did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; (24) who Himself bore our sins in His body on the timber, so that we, having died to sins, might live unto righteousness – by whose stripes you were healed.

Footnote: 1Rom. 6:2, 1 Peter 4:1-2. - 1 Footnote: 11 Cor. 11:1, 1 John 2:6. - 2 Footnotes: 1John 8:55, John 15:10, 2 Cor. 5:21, John 3:5. 2Isa.53:9.

Now read it slowly and notice how it harmonizes with what is being studied in Colossians.

Yahshua said in Yahanan;

John 14:23-24 Yahshua answered him, “If anyone loves Me, he shall guard My Word. And My Father shall love him, and We shall come to him and make Our stay with him. (24) “He who does not love Me does not guard My Words. And the Word which you hear is not Mine but of the Father Who sent Me.

Yahshua is reveling the Will of Yahweh and it is obvious that Yahshua taught in His ministry and what He stood for while He was sojourning with men to a return to the commandments of Yahweh and this was to His apostles and all talmadim, even US.

So, if we follow the Mashiach we will want to keep His Words. Sha’ul urged the Colossians to follow the Messiah and to turn from the spirit of the world which leads one to follow the ways of the flesh. No where can it be found in the Scriptures that Messiah ever called for rejecting the way of life found in keeping the Torah.

Yahshua condemned sin in the flesh; “Romans 8:3  For the Torah being powerless, in that it was weak through the flesh, Elohim, having His own Son in the likeness of flesh of sin, and concerning sin, condemned sin in the flesh,”

He shows us we can live righteously; “Colossians 2:10-12 and you have been made complete in Him, who is the Head of all principality and authority.  (11) In Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Messiah, (12) having been buried with Him in immersion, in which you also were raised with Him through the belief in the working of Yahweh, who raised Him from the dead.”

Here Sha’ul is showing that those who have accepted Yahshua as their Messiah will be circumcised in the soul or the heart as many interpret, when they throw of the body, sin as it were, of the flesh at the burial in the immersion in His Name, we are then raised from the immersion and receive the Ruach HaKodesh to begin a NEW LIFE. This should cause us to raise our eyes or attention to the Heavenlies changing our goals from an earthly orientation to a Spiritual. Yahshua is the head of His people and we should obey Him and follow His example in our lives. He must be our pattern;

“Colossians 2:13-15  And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,  (14)  having blotted out the certificate of debt against us – by the dogmas – which stood against us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the stake.  (15)  Having stripped the principalities and the authorities, He made a public display of them, having prevailed over them in it.

Footnote: 1Eph. 2:1.

Sha’ul is telling us that the people who have trusted in Yahshua HaMashiach have been forgiven their sins by His death that we will be given a new life through the Ruach HaKodesh that was given to us at the immersion into the Name of Yahshua. He has blotted out the ordinances that were against us by the Living Torah. Yahweh’s Law is not against us, it was given to us for OUR good.

Deuteronomy 6:24  ‘And Yahweh commanded us to do all these laws, to fear Yahweh our Elohim, for our good always, to keep us alive, as it is today.

Deuteronomy 10:13 to guard the commands of Yahweh and His laws which I command you today for your good.

Acts 5:32 “And we are His witnesses to these matters, and so also is the Set-apart Spirit whom Elohim has given to those who obey Him.”1 Footnote: 1See 1 John 3:24.

Therefore the key here is OBEDIANCE. We must obey the Laws given by Yahweh as Yahshua was tells us in Scripture.

Many will say that this was nailed at the Stake. What was nailed at the Stake? The only thing was the sign declaring Him as the King of the Jews in Greek and Latin at His head the sacrifice for our sins upon His death.

Did Yahshua come to destroy the moral Torah of Yahweh?

Matthew 5:17-20 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets.1 I did not come to destroy but to complete. Footnote: 1The Law and the Prophets is a term used for the pre-Messianic Scriptures.  (18)  “For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done.1 Footnote: 1Lk. 16:17.  (19)  “Whoever, then, breaks one of the least of these commands, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.  (20)  “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,1 you shall by no means enter into the reign of the heavens.

Yahshua came to save man of their sins.

Matthew 1:21 “And she shall give birth to a Son, and you shall call His Name Yahshua for He shall save His people from their sins.”

This is the precise meaning of the Hebrew of His Name.

He came as the Passover Lamb that took away the sins of the world;

John 1:36 and looking at Yahshua walking, he said, “See the Lamb of Yahweh!”

Hebrews 9:9-10  which was a parable for the present time in which both gifts and slaughters are offered which are unable to perfect the one serving, as to his conscience,  (10)  only as to foods and drinks, and different washings, and fleshly regulations imposed until a time of setting matters straight.

Colossians 2:16-17 Let no one therefore judge you in eating or in drinking, or in respect of a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths –  (17)  which are a shadow of what is to come – but the Body of the Messiah.

So, you judge me because I celebrate the festivals and the new moons and the Sabbaths. What Sha’ul was telling the Colossians not to let anyone judge them because they celebrated the festivals, the new moons and the Shabbat. This was given by Yahweh to men for their good. Yahweh did not give commands to men for His good, but to us the human for our good. The Messiah followed all of the commandments of Yahweh. Yahshua celebrated all of the festivals during His lifetime. If you decided to judge people because they celebrate the festivals the new moons and the Shabbat, then you are judging the Messiah and His Father Yahweh.

Who on earth, man that is, would presume to impose his wishes above the written Laws or commands of Yahweh? Many have tried and it is written in many of the history books of man. One that comes to mind is Constantine and the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church freely admits to changing the Scripturally observance the 7th day Shabbat to Suns-day the 1st day of the week, in opposition to the Word of Yahweh. We must serve and obey Yahweh rather than man.

 Acts 5:29, And Kepha and the other emissaries answering, said, “We

have to obey Yahweh rather than men.

Acts 4:19 But Kepha and Yahanan answering them, said, “Whether it is right in the sight of Yahweh to listen to you more than to Yahweh, you judge.

So, if you or your Church makes up rules contrary to the Word of Yahweh, then we must uphold the Scriptures above all of man’s commandments. What should we judge?

1 Corinthians 11:31-32 For if we were to examine ourselves, we would not be judged.  (32)  But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Master, that we should not be condemned with the world.

Understand, keeping of the festivals, the new moons and the Shabbat is still which are a shadow of what is to come – but the Body of the Messiah.

They depict some momentous event in the plan of Salvation still to come in the future. The Shadow of things to come has not been fulfilled but will be consummated at the return of Yahshua the Messiah and His Kingdom has been established.

Hebrews 4:3-11 For we who have believed do enter into that rest, as He has said, “As I swore in My wrath, if they shall enter into My rest...” And yet His works have come into being from the foundation of the world.  (4)  For somewhere He has said thus about the seventh day, “And Yahweh rested on the seventh day from all His works,” (5) and in this again, “If they shall enter into My rest...”  (6)  Since then it remains for some to enter into it and those who formerly received the Good News did not enter in because of disobedience, (7) He again defines a certain day, “Today,” saying through David? So much later, as it has been said, “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” (8) For if Yahoshua (Joshua) had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.  (9)  So there remains a Sabbath-keeping for the people of Yahweh.  (10)  For the one, having entered into His rest, has himself also rested from his works, as Yahweh rested from His own.  (11)  Let us therefore do our utmost to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience.

No one who does not have the Ruach HaKodesh shall rule our thoughts or our conduct. The Scriptures, Yahweh’s Word are supreme. The Body of Messiah shall judge righteously and they will be keeping the Law of Yahweh, the Torah.

Revelation 14:12 Here is the endurance of the set-apart ones, here are those guarding the commands of Yahweh and the belief of Yahshua.

Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to fight with the remnant of her seed, those guarding the commands of Elohim and possessing the witness of Yahshua Messiah.

Colossians 2:18-23 Let no one deprive you of the prize, one who takes delight in false humility and worship of messengers, taking his stand on what he has not seen, puffed up by his fleshly mind,  (19)  and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the Body – nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments – grows with the growth of Yahweh.  (20)  If, then, you died with Yahshua Messiah from the elementary matters of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations:  (21) “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle” –  (22)  which are all to perish with use – according to the commands and teachings of men?  (23)  These indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed worship, humiliation and harsh treatment of the body – of no value at all, only for satisfaction of the flesh.

Footnote: 1See v. 8, and Gal. 4:3 & 9.

So I will leave you with this; Colossians 3:16 Let the Word of Messiah dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing with pleasure in your hearts to the Master in psalms and songs of praise and spiritual songs.
